I made a discovery!

Early this morning while I was trying to put Cassie to sleep I was left with my thoughts. I had just finished watching MPagar play Little Big Planet, before that I was playing it myself. This is when I realized something, the reason why many females like to watch their significant others play video games, rather than in some cases play it themselves.

It’s like a spectator sport for them. I’m not saying the majority of women prefer to watch over playing, but its now clear to me why. Women watch video games and enjoy doing so for the same reason a lot of men love to watch sports. It’s like watching a movie or an event play out in front of you, but you have more control of the action scenes. In MMOs you have control of a whole lot more. You can make choices that will affect the game in the long run, decide what type of person your character will be. In simple hack n’ slash games you just get pure action that is relaxing to watch and take part in. It’s like being in control over a sport, instead of just yelling and so and so team to do this and you know it won’t be done, you can just back seat game and hope that the person playing will listen to you. It’s more interactive.

I think this also gives women some insight into their partner or friend or family member. Just to see what they are going to do in the game can be almost like seeing who they really are. It has helped me actually see more into my psyche as well.

For example: no matter how much I hate people and how sarcastic I am, in a game where I can choose to be good or evil I will always be super good. Not because I want to, but I just always lean towards that side. Mind you I’m still pretty liberal and although very moral I have my own way of doing things. In Fallout III I killed The Overseer the first chance I got. He was a bastard.

Another reason I enjoy watching someone play a video game is that I like to see someone who is better than me play. I like to see different moves, different approaches to solving puzzles and so forth. I’m more of a blunt, straight forward person. MPagar is more of a fancy, elaborate person. He’s better than me, he has a more years of experience, and he is more calculating than I am. Half of the cool moves I do are by accident. Then there are games I just suck at, like platformers. I rather watch then try and struggle with jumping, this is why I stop playing LBP to play something with more killing in it. I need to play one video game just to relax me from playing another.

So that is my thesis. Video game watching for women is like sports watching for men. Obviously this is a very general example since there are women who like to watch sports as well as participate and vice versa.

Needless to say Cassie didn’t go to sleep right away. Instead she stayed up to play Gears of War 2 Horde mode with daddy. Then after failing with that, she sat back and just told MPagar how to play. It’s so cute, and maybe wrong to see a 3 year old tell you to pull the trigger faster. "Like this Daddy.", while doing the motions.

Ah, video game parenting.
