I was diagnosed with carcinoma in situ and eurothelial cancer in Jan. 2005 and had two spots resected (removed under anesthesia), followed by my first round of 6 BCG treatments. I passed scrutiny in April, had another round of 3 BCG in June, but it came back in July, so had another resection of two different spots in Aug. At that point, my doctor told me I had the gene for recurrence, and that he’d try the BCG once more, this time with Interferon (chemo) added, but he only gave it a 20% chance of working, and if I failed again, I’d have to have my bladder removed (2 months out of work to recover).

By luck, I found by googling that UCLA was in the middle of a multi-year bladder cancer trial of 60% EGCG green tea drops, and that by using only these drops, 63% of first time patients (not recurring like me) had no recurrence after a year because the trial had proved that ECGC helped prevent cancer from recurring in the lining of the bladder. I looked around and the highest EGCG that I could find was 50% in HerbaSway’s Original Green Tea Extract (not the flavored varieties, which have much less EGCG). I started by taking 15 drops in water 3 times a day with food — that’s the equivalent of 90 cups of green tea a day. (FYI, I was 125 lbs at the time; I don’t know if a heavier person needs more or not.) I also took, on the recommendation of an alternative doctor, Miatake D-fraction drops (3 or 5 a day, no more — this is very strong, and only for cancer patients; helps boost immune system; regular Miatake without the D-fraction does not help much for cancer) plus many vitamins, Omega 3, etc. I did this starting in Sept. when the BCG with interferon was started, and by Dec. I was completely cancer free, and have remained so, despite my gene for recurrence. By the way, the doctors told me that my FSH level (a measure of inflammation and an indicator of cancer) in August had been 9,000 (normal is 1-10), and in December it was 0!

I feel very strongly that it was the combination of these things which has led me back to health, because I easily could have been one of the 37% for whom ECGC was not enough by itself in the UCLA trials, and I easily could have failed yet another BCG round, as I had the others. But together, they did the trick. The treatments caused some pain that got better when I realized that, over the course of a year, they had induced a case of Intersticial Cystitus (IC), which I treated by elimating problem foods (the 5 Cs: Coke, coffee, citrus, cajun/spicy, and chocolate — unfair!) and taking baking soda in water and Prelief (available in drug stores) to calm my system. I am now taking Elmiron and amytripline to counter the IC, and am still on a limited diet until the drugs take effect over the next few months.

I continue to use the green tea drops, but now only 5 drops twice a day for maintenance. My urologist knows that I am taking these, and is so confident in my progress that I am now on a 6-month (rather than a 3-month) schedule for cystology (the look-see the doctor does in office; biopsies are only ordered if he/she doesn’t like what he sees.) Oh, one thing — green tea drops act as blood thinners, so stop taking 1 week before and 1 week after a biopsy or other operation, and consult your cardiologist if you already take a blood thinner to see if you should cut down on that drug. Also, I now take my vitamins with meals and the green tea drops in the middle of the day (10am and 2pm) with a little bread, because I was told they work by flushing toxins from the system, and if you happen to take your vitamins at the same time, it will flush them out as well. The green tea extract should cost around $22 for 2 oz (Herbasway.com website may be cheaper); Miatake is more expensive — around $40, I think — but well worth it. I got both from Capitol Drugs in LA.
