The (Ex)Kineda Project

Commenta 15th March , 2008

Many of you know the Kineda-lookalike theme that I started working on towards the end of last year. I’ve always been inspired by Kineda’s front page, with the little news clippings all over, and that’s why I decided to create a theme that would also include that element. Suffice to say, my concept never came close to Kineda’s greatness and it ended up not looking like Kineda at all…

So during the week, I spent about 1.5 half days to finish the development of the theme, when I realized that the theme is just not moving in the right direction anymore (I was going to release it today). Ultimately I ended up making a hard decision to seize the development and start over from scratch. This might not sound like a hard decision, but considering the amount of interest from potential buyers that was shown for the design, it could’ve been quite profitable. But the decision has been made and I won’t be working on Kineda anymore… Here’s the reasons:

  1. I was also working on the new Live Wire themes with Mark Forrester this week and Kineda is just not as strong as the new themes (in a variety of aspects).
  2. After doing the concepts back in December, I lost some of my initial inspiration for the design and I also found that my design / style preferences has changed considerably since then - so it doesn’t make any sense to push through a design which I just don’t dig anymore…
  3. The layout and grid-based structure of the theme wasn’t strong enough. It simply didn’t shout super-quality at me and that is something we’re striving for in future Premium News Themes. I was also trying to mash up a Kineda-inspired design with our standard Premium News features (featured news area, video panel, tabber etc.), which simply was not working as well as expected.

So where does this leave you? Since I’ve had many e-mails about the theme’s release date in the last few months, I’ve decided to make the unfinished theme available to everyone that’s interested. I’ve finished all the coding on the homepage of the theme and haven’t started working on any of the inner pages. This means that I’m releasing the theme “as-is” and labeling it as an unfinished project. The reason for releasing the theme and it’s code, is because I figured that someone else might find it useful and might be able to build on this basis. Here’s how the theme’s front page is looking at the moment (click for a full screenshot):

  2. The files are distributed “as-is” and it’s noted that the WordPress theme is unfinished and not fully functional.
  3. I will not be offering support for this theme in any way - so don’t e-mail me about this theme. You can however engage me in a conversation about the theme and its capabilities through the comments on this blog post.
  4. I haven’t included any documentation in the theme files - so you’re on your own to figure it out.

And here we go with the download links:

Hope you’ll find the code and design useful!
