WordPress: The Fairytale Job?
Brian Gardner recently announced his new career as a full-time WordPress freelancer with a brand new design. Now going freelance and establishing a new media design agency (with a strong WP focus), was the exact opportunity that I passed up on in December, when I decided to rather go into the corporate world.
So would I say that I’m slightly jealous of Brian’s new job? To some very realistic extent, for sure… I had spent a whole year of my life building an image of being a WordPress Rockstar, yet now I won’t be focusing solely on WordPress anymore (as I did in 2007).
I’ve always known that WordPress (and new media in general) won’t be able to sustain my business ambitions forever, plus I’m of the opinion that I would’ve needed to continuously adapt my business model (if I went for the WP-focussed new media agency) to stay ahead and earn a living. So the decision to go into the corporate world or to stay with WP wasn’t a clear-cut choice - with both decisions offering different pros and cons. I mean at the moment, I’m working on a campaign that incorporates a much wider variety of Web 2 applications, than I would’ve have, had I still only been doing WP work.
That said though, I’m still firmly entrenched in my mission to become the best WordPress designer in the world and my rockstar / evangelistic personality when it comes to WP won’t fade! I still do WP work - just in a slightly different way to last year!
