WPDesigner Being Sold: Would you buy it?
I think the word around WordPress town, seems to be Small Potato’s decision to sell his beloved WPDesigner.com. Many of you will remember my infamous falling out with SP last year October and ever since that day I have not mentioned SP or WPDesigner in any of my posts - instead I’ve basically been ignoring what he’s been doing.
So this morning, I catch onto the news that WPDesigner.com has come up on a Sitepoint Auction, with the first bid being at $15 000 USD (with a very ambitious buy now price of $65 000). Looking through all the information provided, the next owner of WPDesigner.com will definitely have a wonderful platform from where to launch into a WordPress-related business model. But even considering that, I’m definitely not interested in buying the blog…
I don’t think that WPDesigner.com deserves much more than $25 000 (not deserve, as much, as I won’t pay more than that, considering that the buyer would still need to earn an appropriate return on investment) and I’ll be surprised if the auction pushes purchase price too far beyond that mark. One thing that SP however does have in his favour, is his domain name, which is not linked to his own personality; which suggests that he should be able to get a proper price for his hard work in establishing the blog in the last 2 odd years.
I’ve always felt that WPDesigner.com was the prime spot to launch into a WordPress-focused designs business, yet SP have continuously failed to launch (his most recent $5 themes club just another example of how he has failed to maximize his site’s potential). Irrespective however, I don’t begrudge SP in this sense and I hope that he gets a price that justifies all the effort he put into putting WPDesigner.com on the map.
I’ll be watching the auction with a keen eye, simply because the future owner will probably be direct competition to me (in the premium themes space), considering they would want to make their money back ASAP.
